How to Calculate Your Body Mass Index (BMI)

The main method of figuring out how "fat" one is commonly referred to by the body mass index (BMI). The BMI is calculated from a person\'s height and weight.

Figuring out your BMI is pretty simple as it can be done with a few calculations. Here is how you calculate it:

1. Measure your height in inches (feet times 12) and then multiply that number by itself.

2. Measure your weight and then divide it by the number you got from Step 1.

3. Take the number from step two, and multiply that by 705.

This gives you an estimate of your current BMI.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the BMI guidelines are:

Less than 19 = Underweight

19 to 24.9 = Healthy

25 to 29.9 = Overweight

30 or greater = Obese

This gives a general indication as to who is "in shape" and who is not. People in general have a higher risk for heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, gallbladder disease and even death when they have a BMI of over 25. Although, many people argue that these guidelines are arbitrary and controversial. There is not a specific guideline that "fits" everyone so setting an overweight BMI of 25 is very arbitrary. Not only is it different for everyone, but BMI is only one factor of your health. BMI does not include environmental factors, family history, immune status or anything else. In addition, in addition, people who are more built up or pregnant do not fit these guidelines very well.

The reason why BMI is so popular today is that it is the easiest and least expensive way of determining whether one is overweight. There are no fees, no equipment, no gym membership, no embarrassment and no work to determine a BMI.
