Why Your Feet Stink and How to Reduce the Smell

We sweat all over our body because sweat is a natural reaction of the body to heat. When temperatures are high, the body secretes liquid substances to try and regulate the temperature of the body. Some parts of our body contain much higher concentration of sweat glands than other parts and therefore these parts usually bring out more sweat than others. An example is the human foot which contains about 250,000 sweat glands each. No wonder our feet are among the most perspiring parts of our body, sometimes each foot can even produce more than a pint of sweat in a single day!

The smell that usually comes from our feet is produced by the action of bacteria on the sweat that comes out of our feet. These bacteria are usually present on our skin but they thrive on the moisture produced and excretes waste which brings out a strong and offensive odor.

Why Our Feet Smell

Because of the socks and shoes that we wear, the sweat that our feet excretes cannot easily escape into the air like it\'s done on other parts of the body. All the sweat collects in our socks and then inside our shoes, as a result of this the bacteria resort to a kind of a feeding frenzy and because the place is dark it creates the perfect condition for them to thrive. The waste generated as a result of this activity accumulates inside the socks and the shoes, so when the person takes off his shoes the smell that emanates is as a result of this.

Some peoples\' socks, shoes and feet smell much more than others. Such people can easily clear a room in a matter of seconds when they take-off their shoes. The reason why they smell more is simply because their feet produce much more sweat.

How To Reduce Stinking Feet

You can reduce the odor that comes out from your feet by taking the following steps. These steps will reduce the amount of bacteria on your feet and at the same time reduce the amount of sweat that collects on your feet and inside the shoes.

  • Make sure that you always wear clean socks made of cotton or other absorbent materials.
  • Do not wear the same shoes everyday and always leave shoes for at least twenty four hours to air out before you wear them again.
  • Always wash your feet with powerful anibacterial soap.
  • Always wear well-ventilated shoes.
  • Change your socks several times everyday. This means you must have several pairs of socks.
  • Apply an antiperspirant to your feet.
